Fiberglass replaces deteriorating concrete at university dining halls Until recently, all the grease interceptors at this university’s dining halls were concrete. When they began to replace the deteriorating concrete units, they installed a coated-steel grease interceptor. They soon discovered that the tank coating required for corrosion-protection added unexpected costs. Searching for an easier, less expensive option, the Michigan university’s mechanical engineers turned to corrosion-resistant fiberglass, and replaced a 2,500-gallon concrete grease interceptor with a 20,000-gallon Xerxes grease interceptor for a 600-seat dining hall. This was followed by another replacement of an aging interceptor at the university when one of our 25,000-gallon grease interceptors was installed at a second hall. When food companies like this frozen-seafood processing facility need new or replacement grease interceptors, they look for reliable, costeffective products. They analyze both shortterm and long-term costs: the tank price, tank longevity, and the costs to ship, install and maintain the interceptor over time. This Virginia facility determined that a Xerxes fiberglass grease interceptor fit all these requirements, starting with cost savings in shipping and installing a lightweight tank. With grease’s corrosive nature, they saw the value in corrosion-resistant fiberglass, which avoids the leaks, odor and tank failure common with concrete units. The 7,000-gallon tank’s three compartments are separated by baffles and fitted with manways so each compartment is easily accessed and cleaned out.
